ABOUT THE CAMP
Purros Canyon Camp is what the adventurous traveller dreams of. Set in one of Namibias most breathtaking and untouched landscapes where wildlife such as elephant, giraffe, lion, rhino, zebra, baboon, oryx, springbok, kudu, warthog and hyena among many others roam free. This is not a reserve – just the natural setting for these animals. Elephants and giraffe sometimes pass through the campground and you can listen to the wildlife from your tent at night; an unforgettable experience. The area is rich in birdlife; you may spot such species as the yellow hornbill, pied crow, chanting goshawk, greater kestrel, ostrich, tawny eagle, helmeted guinea fowl, sociable weaver, forktailed drongo and lilac breasted roller. Here you can also visit Himba tribes living as they have done for centuries, not in a staged environment.
The campground opened in June 2018. It is basic but beautiful as camping should be. Its location by the canyon offers campsites with breathtaking views; you can watch sunset and moon rise while enjoying a sundowner. Campsites are spaced far apart and on completion there will only be 6 sites in total, ensuring privacy and tranquility. Each site has private ablution facilities crafted into the natural surroundings, open air showers with hot & cold water, a flushing loo with a view, sink and braai (barbecue) area with plenty of shade underneath the camel thorn trees, firewood can also be supplied. Other than that travellers must be self sufficient; there is a shop in the local village selling a few basic requirements (including alcohol). This is a community run venture so all proceeds go straight back into our grateful community.
The local guide and owner of the campsite, Robbin, is an excellent local naturalist, historian and translator who can take you on exciting tours beyond Purros into the wildlife rich canyons and riverbeds and nearby himba settlements
